The real Mardi Gras is about creative costuming and krewes staging processions that are a feast for the senses — with floats that bemuse and entertain; rollicking bands full of joyful noise; inspired dance troupes and showers of baubles that stoke an exhilarating feeding frenzy. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17
11 a.m.
Artisans from around the country display their creations in a section of the French Market known as the Farmer’s Market, where Gov. Nicholls St. meets French Market Place. Mask market founder Mike Stark, who passed away in 1998, once described the event as offering “the most beautiful and comprehensive display of masks in this hemisphere.” There are also festival food booths and, starting at noon, free live music.
